Plot of the Movie
Bea, a law student at Boston University, meets Ben, a worker at Goldman Sachs, at a coffee shop. The two hit it off right away and spend the rest of the day together before falling asleep on Ben’s couch. Without waking him in the morning, she departs, but she soon changes her mind. Upon her arrival back to the flat, she hears Ben disparaging her in a conversation with his friend Pete. Bea departs, not comprehending how much her leaving has devastated him.
Six months later, Bea and Ben re-connect when Bea’s sister Halle starts dating Pete’s sister Claudia. The two have a chilly relationship and accuse one another of ruining their date. After being engaged, Halle and Claudia decide to marry in Sydney.
Bea is shocked to learn that she and Ben would be spending the days before the wedding at Claudia and Pete’s parents’ house. Bea broke up with her fiancé Jonathan and dropped out of law school. The other guests at the wedding party are irritated by their contempt for one another, which is exacerbated by the arrival of Bea’s and Ben’s ex-partners, Jonathan and Margaret, respectively.
To make sure the wedding goes well, the guests come up with a scheme to get Bea and Ben together. After realizing the plan, Bea strikes a bargain with Ben to stage a relationship in order to appease Margaret and deter Bea’s parents from pressuring her to make amends with Jonathan. Early attempts to market the relationship fail until Bea and Ben have a dance party on a boat and act out a scenario from Titanic, which culminates in Bea plunging into Sydney Harbor.
Ben follows her in the water; as they wait for help on a buoy, she informs him that she has dropped out of law school, and they arrange a date to see the Sydney Opera House. After returning home, they engage in sexual activity, but Ben is let down when Bea casually implies that her recent behavior was all an error. Bea is devastated when he disappears in the morning.
Bea feels deceived when Ben subtly informs her parents that she has dropped out of law school the morning of the wedding. Ben persuades Bea to pretend to get back together for the wedding when he overhears her and Halle fighting. The wedding proceeds without a hitch, but Bea cries up as she heads to the Opera House after witnessing Margaret kissing Ben. Ben, on the other hand, rejects Margaret and claims he no longer feels anything for her. He falls from a cliff into the Pacific Ocean when the wedding guests persuade him to pursue Bea, and he later gets the rescue chopper to fly him to the Opera House.
Ben explains to Bea that he departed out of concern that their union might turn into yet another regret. After they make up and return to the reception as a couple, Halle and Claudia confess that their disagreement was a set-up meant to bring them closer. Margaret and Jonathan get together in the interim.
